Into the Woods
by Stephen Sondheim

Assistant Lighting Designer
University of Northern Iowa, spring 2017

In conjunction with the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, TheatreUNI put on its production of Into the Woods. This meant nearly twice the resources to dedicate to the show. With that, we were able to add effects, technology, and production value otherwise out of reach. These offered a new set of advantages, disadvantages, and challenges in working.

  • new equipment including LED bricks, strips, and movers

  • most of the set was also used as a projection surface

  • the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center features a significantly larger stage than Strayer-Wood Theatre

  • full orchestra onstage

  • multiple LED fixtures in inventory and a wireless NeoPixel-infused dress

Assistant Lighting Designer

As ALD, I worked with the designer to create the plot and was tasked with creating spotlight cues and designing the lights onstage for the song It Takes Two.

Though my chosen scene, It Takes Two, was mine to design, it still needed to transition from late afternoon to evening and remain cohesive with the rest of the show. I had to ensure that my style matched closely with my designer's as to not look out of place.
